Suzanne's Tip of the Week - Formula for Half Square Triangles

Learning to do the math in quilting can be fun. Leaning to do the math has helped in pattern design. Here is a basic formulas for triangles you should commit to memory. Half square triangles are 2 triangles sewn together to make a square. Take the finished size of the square you want (that's minus seam allowance) and add 7/8". Example. 3" finished size square plus 7/8" equals 3 7/8" Rotary cut a 3 7/8" square. Cut on the diagonal once. Two of these triangles when sewn back together will give you a 3" finished square. Square cut for half square triangles always end in a fraction like 3/8", 5/8" or 7/8". We sell Triangles on a Roll paper. My customer are always asking me how to convert a quilt pattern into using triangles on a roll. This formula helps them understand it. If you have a pattern asking you to cut triangles for 3 7/8" squares then you could use 3" finished size Triangles On A Roll paper. All you need to do is subtract 7/8" from your cutting measurement to find the finished size. Happy Quilting, Suzanne
