Suzanne's Tip of the Week - Rulers

My favorite ruler is the Big Mama ruler by Trudie Hughes. The Big Mama combined with the Trudie's Rotary Rule can cut all kinds of shapes (squares, triangles, diamonds, snowballs, and trapezoids) from very small to very large. The two rulers, Big Mama is 6 1/2" x 12" and the Rotary Rule is 3 1/2" x 24" work together. The lines are fine, black and easy to read. There are not too many lines or to get your eyes distracted. There are no grips on the bottom. I like having no grips on the bottom because I can go from cutting squares to triangles very smoothly with out disturbing the stack of fabric. I have learned to hold the rulers in place with my finger extended like a spider and my pinky finger on the edge.
Trudie also makes the Big Daddy ruler 6 1/2" x 24" and the Rotary Mate 3 1/2" x 12". These are nice additions to the set. When cutting for a quilt I like to use the same brand all the way through. My eyes get use to looking for the measurements in the same place and there is better accuracy.
Being a quilt shop owner and teacher for more than 21 years I have tried all the brands on the market. Trudie's rulers are the ones I use. Trudie Hughes owned a quilt shop in Wisconsin for over 35 years. She was a leader in the quilting industry with her rulers, patterns and 14 books before she retired 3 years ago. Today she spends her time quilting up a storm for children's charities. I was fortunate to have her as a teacher and learn good skills.
