Suzanne's Tip of the Week - Selvages
 |
The selvage is the finished edge on your fabric. On the selvage you will see important information about manufacturer, designer and collection. Sometimes there is a pattern number. This is good information to have on hand when you need to go find more of that fabric.
The threads in the selvages are more tightly woven. The selvage is not recommended to be used in your quilt.
I don't like the selvage in the seams on the back of my quilt back. The selvages will shrink differently than the rest of the fabric and cause a pucker. When preparing backing for a quilt I like to remove the selvages by taking a snip on the raw edge side and tearing the selvage off at about 1/2". I call it "snip and rip". If your fabric is good quality it will tear straight. If it does not tear straight you do not want that fabric in your quilt.
My leftover selvages are used to tie up tomato plants and rose bushes. This is a good way to recycle. Selvages are very strong. Years ago someone told me they used the selvages to truss a turkey. Do you know what that means?
Happy Quilting,
Suzanne |
